TNPSC Exams are conducted by Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. It is held within the state.
There are various exams conducted under this category: Group 1,2,3,4 which are collectively known
as TNPSC Group Exams. The categories and selection depend on the number of posts and vacancies
based on the quota.
TNPSC GROUP 1 EXAMS
The Group 1 examination welcomes the candidates for Group 1 category posts like Assistant
Commissioner, Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, District Officer etc., It includes
services within the state i.e. Tamil Nadu state administration.
Eligibility:
- The candidate must be an Indian citizen with valid citizenship.
- He / She must have graduated from a recognized university or institute. The degree
obtained must be at least a three-year degree course.
- The age limit is not less than 21 years and not above 32 years.
- Few posts demand physical qualification as well. The post like Deputy Superintendent of
Police and Fire and Rescue Officer demands physical qualification like height, weight,
respiration rate, and chest measurements while breathing and relaxing. However, the
measurements differ for men and women.
- The candidate must possess a fluent language in Tamil. And a compatible knowledge in
English and National language.
Vacancies:
The opening for the post depends on the vacancies. It differs each year according to the
quota. The candidates are advised to look on the official website before applying to know
the category-wise vacancies of the posts.
Group 1 posts:
Most of the posts of Group 1 are District level officer posts as the post involves the
management of activities of the district. Some of the posts include Deputy Collector, Deputy
Superintendent of Police (Category 1), Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes), Deputy
Registrar Co-Operative societies, Assistant Director of Rural Development, District OfficerFire and Rescue Services. These posts are titled under the name of different services like
Tamil Nadu Civil service, Tamil Nadu Police Service, Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Service,
Tamil Nadu Co-Operative Service, Tamil Nadu Panchayat Development Service, Tamil Nadu
Fire and Rescue Services.
Group 1 Salary
If you are appointed as any of the above-mentioned officers, then you not only get salary
but also it includes various benefits and allowances. The initial pay as in the recent times is
around Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500. Some of the allowances of this post include medical
allowance, City Compensation Allowance, HRA and few more. However, the benefits might
differ from post to post.
Exam pattern
1. Prelims:The prelims exam is multiple-choice questions of 150 marks. The paper is a general studies
paper with specific subjects that includes –
• Economy of the country
• Indian National movement
• General science
• Current affairs
• Geography
• History about India and Indian Culture
• Aptitude and Mental Ability Tests
• Logical reasoning
2.Main Exams:
After you qualify in the prelims, you are selected to appear for the TNPSC Group main exams.
This part contains 3 sections, 250 each with a total of 850 marks in total. Unlike the prelims
exams, this exam is a descriptive type exam i.e. written exam test. However, the cut-off
mark is based on the requirements and categories.

➢ Indian polity and Emerging trend in politics affecting India

➢ Geography of India and Tamil Nadu in particular
➢ Environment, Biodiversity and Disaster Management
➢ Indian Economy and current trends
3. Interview:
After qualifying the Main exam, the candidates will be selected for a personal interview for
100 marks to examine the mental ability and spontaneous decision-making capacity of the
candidates. Their performance determines how fit they are for the positions across various
administration posts in Tamil Nadu. After this, you can check the result in TNPSC official

PREPARATION FOR THE EXAM:
To attend this Group exam, the candidate must have a thorough knowledge on the current day-to-
day affairs. Some of the books you can refer to are –

- Economics – 11 th and 12 th state board books
- Geography – 6 th to 10 th state board books
- Current affairs – daily Tamil and English newspapers
