1. Nobel Prize in Economics 2026: Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford

On October 12, 2026, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that American economists Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford will share the 2026 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

They were honoured for their work on the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation. In simple words, their research explains how decisions taken by households and firms shape the way monetary policy (interest rates set by central banks) and fiscal policy (government spending and taxes) affect inflation, recessions and economic shocks.

  • Why it matters for exams: The Economics prize is the last Nobel announced each year and a regular question in GK sections. Remember the names, the country (USA) and the theme of macroeconomic stabilisation.

2. Shubman Gill and Shafali Verma Named ICC Players of the Month

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on October 13, 2026 that India's Shubman Gill and Shafali Verma won the ICC Player of the Month awards for September 2026.

Gill won the men's award for a record fifth time. In the ODI series against the West Indies, he scored 110 in the first match in Thiruvananthapuram and then a blistering 223 off 133 balls, described by the ICC as the quickest ODI double-century, as India chased 406. Shafali Verma won the women's award for the second time after finishing as India's top run-scorer in the Women's Asia Cup with 360 runs and scoring an unbeaten 100 in the Asian Games semi-final.

  • Why it matters for exams: Sports awards are easy marks. Note that both winners are Indian and that Gill now has five Player of the Month awards, the most by a male cricketer.

3. PM GatiShakti National Master Plan Completes Five Years

The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, launched on October 13, 2021, completed five years on October 13, 2026. It is a digital platform that brings together infrastructure planning across ministries so that roads, railways, ports, pipelines and other projects are planned in a coordinated way instead of in silos.

According to All India Radio, the platform now integrates more than 1,800 data layers drawn from 58 Central Ministries and Departments and covers all 36 States and Union Territories. Over 400 infrastructure projects worth more than ₹20 lakh crore have been evaluated using GatiShakti principles.

  • Why it matters for exams: GatiShakti is a favourite topic in economy and governance papers. Remember the launch date (October 13, 2021), the idea of integrated multimodal planning, and the figure of 1,800+ data layers.

4. Lakshadweep Declared a 100% Literate Union Territory

Lakshadweep was declared a fully literate Union Territory on October 11, 2026. The announcement was made by Administrator Praful Patel at a function in Kavaratti.

The achievement came under ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, also known as the New India Literacy Programme. It is a centrally sponsored adult education scheme aimed at people aged 15 and above who missed formal schooling. It focuses on basic reading, writing and numeracy along with life skills such as digital and financial literacy.

  • Why it matters for exams: Questions like 'Which UT was recently declared fully literate under ULLAS?' are very likely. Also remember the full name of ULLAS and its target group (15 years and above).

5. Tamil Nadu Releases 2027 Public Exam Timetable

On October 14, 2026, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister A. Rajmohan released the 2027 public examination timetable prepared by the Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE).

Class 12 theory exams will run from March 3 to March 29, 2027, starting with Tamil. Class 10 (SSLC) theory exams will run from March 17 to April 12, 2027. Class 10 practical exams are scheduled from February 19 to 26, 2027. Results are tentatively expected in May 2027. The full timetable is available on dge.tn.gov.in.

  • Why it matters for exams: This is relevant for Tamil Nadu state-level GK and for students and parents. Note the start dates of the Class 12 and Class 10 exams.

6. Tamil Nadu Launches Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay unveiled the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026 at the Secretariat in Chennai on October 15, 2026. The scheme aims to attract investment across the full semiconductor value chain and to complement incentives from the Union government.

It has two tracks. Under Track 1, projects approved under the Centre's India Semiconductor Mission (including Semicon India Programme 2.0, approved by the Union Cabinet in July 2026) can get an additional state investment promotion subsidy of 15% to 25% of eligible capital expenditure. Track 2 offers customised incentives for strategically important projects not covered by central schemes. Covered activities include chip design, wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP), equipment, raw materials, R&D and skill development. The scheme follows the earlier announcement of a Semiconductor and Electronics Park at Maduramangalam in Kancheepuram district.

  • Why it matters for exams: Semiconductors are a hot topic in economy and science papers. Link this state scheme to India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 when writing answers.

7. Supreme Court Upholds Ruling on BC (Muslim) Sub-Quota for Converts

On October 15, 2026, a Supreme Court bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Shree Chandrashekhar dismissed Tamil Nadu's Special Leave Petition against a Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) judgment dated June 25, 2026. The High Court had struck down a 2024 government order relating to community certificates for people who convert to Islam.

The view upheld was that social backwardness linked to a person's original religion or caste does not automatically transfer to a new religion on conversion. Tamil Nadu's BC (Muslim) sub-quota is 3.5% within the 30% Backward Classes quota and was introduced in 2007. On October 17, the State's Law Minister said the government would consult stakeholders and consider amending the law.

  • Why it matters for exams: Reservation is a core polity topic. Remember the 3.5% BC (Muslim) sub-quota, Tamil Nadu's overall 69% reservation, and the legal principle discussed here.

8. INS Samarthak Commissioned into the Indian Navy

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan commissioned INS Samarthak at the INS Kadamba naval base in Karwar, Karnataka, on October 16, 2026. The ship was built by Larsen & Toubro at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu under the Make in India initiative and has over 75% indigenous content.

INS Samarthak is a multi-purpose vessel about 107 metres long. Its main role is to act as a test platform for indigenous weapons, radars, sensors and unmanned systems. It can also carry out maritime surveillance, patrolling, training, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR).

  • Why it matters for exams: Defence questions often ask for the place of commissioning, the builder and the role. Remember: Karwar, L&T (Kattupalli), multi-purpose vessel, 75%+ indigenous.

9. Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) Reconstituted

The Centre reconstituted the Financial Services Institutions Bureau with effect from October 16, 2026. S.C.L. (Subhas Chandra Lal) Das, a retired IAS officer, has been named part-time Chairperson for three years. The post had been vacant since the term of Bhanu Pratap Sharma ended on June 30, 2026.

The FSIB recommends candidates for top posts in public sector banks, public sector insurance companies and public financial institutions. The final decision rests with the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by the Prime Minister. The bureau replaced the earlier Banks Board Bureau.

  • Why it matters for exams: Banking awareness sections regularly ask about the FSIB, its chairperson and its predecessor (Banks Board Bureau).

10. RBI Approves Emirates NBD–RBL Bank Amalgamation

On October 16, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India approved the amalgamation of the Indian branches of Dubai-based Emirates NBD Bank P.J.S.C. with RBL Bank Ltd, effective December 1, 2026.

Emirates NBD had acquired a majority stake of about 60% in RBL Bank in June 2026 through a primary capital infusion of roughly ₹26,000 crore. The deal, first announced in October 2025, is described as the largest foreign direct investment in Indian banking. RBL Bank is headquartered in Mumbai and was founded in 1943 in Kolhapur as Ratnakar Bank. The FDI limit for private sector banks in India is 74%.

  • Why it matters for exams: Expect questions on the bank names, the effective date, RBL Bank's original name (Ratnakar Bank) and the 74% FDI cap in private banks.

11. Centre Caps Trade Margins on Anti-Cancer Medicines

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) capped trade margins on a set of anti-cancer formulations at 30%. Trade margin is the gap between the price at which a medicine leaves the manufacturer and the price the patient finally pays. Very high margins in the supply chain often make cancer drugs far more expensive than they need to be.

By limiting these margins, the government expects patients to save substantially on cancer treatment. For the exact list of medicines covered and the price reference used, check the official NPPA notification.

  • Why it matters for exams: The NPPA works under the Department of Pharmaceuticals and implements the Drugs (Prices Control) Order. Trade margin rationalisation is a recurring health-policy topic.

12. FSSAI Draft Rules Ban Added Sugar in Infant Food

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released draft Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Amendment Regulations, 2026. The draft proposes a ban on added sucrose and fructose in foods meant for infants up to six months of age.

This is a composition rule, not just a labelling rule, so manufacturers would have to change their recipes. Lactose and glucose polymers remain the preferred carbohydrate sources. The public can send objections and suggestions for 60 days from the date the Gazette copies are made available.

  • Why it matters for exams: FSSAI is a statutory body set up under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and works under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Child nutrition is a frequent theme in social sector questions.

13. Mars-Like Sites Identified in Tamil Nadu and Chile

Indian scientists, in work highlighted by the Department of Science and Technology on October 16, 2026, identified Martian analogue sites on Earth. These are places whose rocks, soils and landforms resemble conditions on Mars.

The sites include Neyveli and the Tiruchirappalli badlands in Tamil Nadu, along with Chile's Atacama Desert. Such analogue sites help scientists test instruments, rovers and research methods before they are used on actual Mars missions.

  • Why it matters for exams: A likely question is 'Which places in Tamil Nadu were recently identified as Martian analogue sites?' Answer: Neyveli and the Tiruchirappalli badlands.

14. Spot-Bellied Eagle-Owl Photographed in Kozhikode, Kerala

The Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl (Bubo nipalensis), also called the Forest Eagle-Owl, was photographed in the Janakikkad forest in Kozhikode district, Kerala. Reports on October 17, 2026 described it as the first photographic record of the species at that location.

This is one of India's largest owls, measuring around 50 to 65 cm. Its IUCN status is Least Concern, though its population is declining. It is found from the lower Himalayas to Indo-China, and also in the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka.

  • Why it matters for exams: Environment sections love species-in-news questions. All Indian owls are listed in Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

15. Tamil Nadu to Sell Fine Rice at ₹30 per kg

To tackle rising rice prices and food inflation, the Tamil Nadu government announced that fine-quality rice will be sold at ₹30 per kg through cooperative stores. The announcement was made by Minister P. Venkataramanan.

Fine rice prices had been climbing in retail markets, adding to household expenses. Selling through cooperative outlets lets the state offer a lower price directly to consumers. Check the official announcement for the start date and purchase limits.

  • Why it matters for exams: Questions on state measures against food inflation are common in TNPSC papers. Link it to the role of cooperative stores in the public distribution system.
